Consultation has concluded

Foothills School Division has begun planning for a 1:1 Device Program. This program, scheduled to launch in September 2022, would allow for each student in Grade 4-12 to have a Chromebook for use at school and home.

The Foothills School Division Board of Trustees has reviewed the consultation feedback and has determined there is community interest and support in implementing a 1:1 Device Program.

Over the 2021-2022 school year, Foothills School Division will:

  • Develop a device rental program.
  • Allow families at Foothills Composite, Highwood, Oilfields, Heritage Heights, Turner Valley, and Blackie Schools the option to purchase Chromebooks at cost ($267).
    • Foothills School Division will purchase the required licences to ensure these devices can easily connect to FSD networks, print, and be available for exams.
  • Replace internet switches and action points at Foothills Composite, Highwood, and Oilfields High Schools to ensure reliable connectivity in these locations.

If you have any questions surrounding the 1:1 Device Program please contact Sally Smith, Director of Technology.

Foothills School Division is committed to equitable learning technology access in support of student achievement. To provide students with increased opportunities, we are considering a new one-to-one (1:1) Device Program that would ensure that each student in Grades 4-12 had access to a Chromebook at all times.

Does this mean that my child will be learning on a laptop all day?

Teachers will establish daily procedures with students and support the integration of technology and digital citizenship into their learning experiences. While digital devices such as Chromebooks and Laptops are valuable tools, they are one aspect of a well-balanced educational program. Teachers will continue to use a variety of educational tools and programs to provide a comprehensive learning experience for students.

What type of device will students have?

Although different devices are permitted in the classroom to be used for educational purposes, the primary device students should use is a Chromebook or a laptop. Note that tablets or phones are not considered adequate devices because of the difficulty using them with the programs that will utilized in the classroom.

Will the device be available for home use?

Students will take their devices home each day and ensure that they are charged and returned to school the following day. It is important that they have an established routine so that they have access to their Chromebook each day at school.

    How much will this cost?

Foothills School Division will loan devices to students who require them. Similar to our instrument rental program, a proposed charge of $100 per year will be added to student fees for each loaned device.

I don't want to rent a loaned device, can I bring my own?

Students who have their own personal device are encouraged to use it under our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative. Although there is no requirement for students to bring their own devices, there are many benefits of doing so:

    • Students are already familiar and comfortable using their own technology so they can focus on learning rather than on learning how to use the device.
    • Students demonstrate more confidence when their device is customized for their needs.
    • Students take control of ensuring that their device is working, instilling a sense of responsibility.

Will personal devices connect to school Wi-Fi?

Upgrades to our guest network will be implemented to ensure that student owned devices have reliable connectivity. FSD security will remain in place, including parental controls for any device connected to our networks.

Will FSD have any recommendations on where to purchase technology?

Yes, we will partner with our vendors to provide easy access to purchase approved devices for families.

What are the minimum device requirements?

The laptop should meet the following requirements:

    • Battery life of 6 hours or longer
    • Have Google Chrome Browser installed on the device
    • Must be able to access and navigate the internet via WiFi using 802.11n or 802.11ac standards.
    • Have a minimum 10” screen.
    • Have a built in, USB or bluetooth keyboard/touchpad/mouse
    • Have a 3.5mm audio jack or Bluetooth audio capability
    • Have a minimum storage capacity of:
      • Chromebook - 32GB
      • Windows - 64GB
      • MacBook - 128GB

    Will you offer technology support?

Support will be offered to help students connect to the FSD network, but we will be unable to help with hardware issues that would negate a device warranty.
